The Application of CO2 Laser in the Packaging Industry


CO2 lasers are widely utilized in the packaging industry for various purposes, including marking, cutting, perforating, and engraving. They can create holes in plastic films for packaging fresh produce, produce tear strips through laser engraving, and mark information on cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, and metal cans.

Laser processing is fast, clean and flexible. The CO2 laser has three different wavelengths and can be selected for different plastic packaging materials. The laser can precisely control the punching and marking process, and can be modified at any time, and completed in an instant.

1. Packaging Marking:

Lasers can ablate packaging materials such as paper and cardboard, leaving behind clear and high-quality marks. The color and contrast of the markings depend on the background color of the material. Information such as expiration dates, batch codes, barcodes, and QR codes can be inscribed on the materials and updated as needed. Furthermore, laser marking is permanent and cannot be erased.


2. Fresh-keeping packaging punching:

Compared with non-porous packaging, laser punching fresh-keeping packaging can extend the shelf life of certain fruits and vegetables and maintain the freshness of products. The CO2 laser punches holes on the plastic packaging film as required, and the hole spacing can be flexibly changed according to the product type. 

3.Easy-open packaging

CO2 lasers can score lines on various small bags of easy-open packaging, allowing for effortless tearing along the indicated lines. Since the laser does not penetrate the packaging, the bags remain airtight until opened by the consumer. CO2 lasers offer three wavelengths to accommodate different packaging materials, enabling scoring, marking, and perforating of the packaging.


4. Semi-Cut Adhesive Labels:

Half cutting is the selective cutting of the top layer of the material while leaving the bottom layer intact. The CO2 laser can be used for half-cutting self-adhesive label paper, plastic or a combination of both. Laser cutting provides great flexibility, and the cutting profile can be changed at will without the need for additional tools. The laser parameters are adjusted to suit different material types and thicknesses. The laser must maintain a high degree of power stability without damaging the material and backing paper. CO2 lasers are available in three different wavelengths, which can be selected depending on the label material.
